As Nigerians commemorate Democracy Day, a member of the House of Representatives representing Surulere II Federal Constituency of Lagos State, Hon. Lanre Okunlola, has described Nigeria as a “work in progress,” expressing optimism that the country is on the path to greater economic and democratic development.
Speaking in an exclusive interview, Okunlola said Nigeria’s democratic journey remains a gradual process of nation-building, likening the country to a construction site where institutions and governance structures are continuously being strengthened.
According to him, recent economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu have begun to position Nigeria for growth, noting that global economic indicators show positive prospects for the country.
“Nigeria is evolving into a nation that will move from where it is today to becoming a more powerful country in the world. Democracy has given the people the opportunity to determine their leaders, and we must continue to strengthen that process,” he said.
The lawmaker also commended the House of Representatives for passing the constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police, describing the development as a landmark achievement in the country’s efforts to tackle insecurity.
He argued that decentralising policing would bring security closer to the people, eliminate bureaucratic bottlenecks, and enable states to respond more effectively to local security challenges.
“The security architecture must evolve. State policing will help address insecurity at the grassroots and make Nigeria safer for citizens and businesses. The House has demonstrated its commitment by supporting the bill, and we are working to ensure the country becomes secure again,” Okunlola stated.
Sending a Democracy Day message to Nigerians, the federal lawmaker acknowledged the economic difficulties facing citizens but urged them to remain patient and hopeful.
“Times are hard, but Nigerians are patient people. I believe the policies being implemented by the President will eventually yield results. Tomorrow looks good, and very soon Nigeria will become the destination we all desire,” he said.
Reflecting on the performance of the 10th House of Representatives ahead of its third anniversary on June 13, Okunlola described the period as eventful and productive.
He noted that he has sponsored 19 bills since assuming office, including two key fellowship bills aimed at addressing the needs and aspirations of his constituents.
He reaffirmed his commitment to legislative interventions that would improve governance and enhance the welfare of Nigerians.
“Congratulations to Nigerians on Democracy Day. Together, we will continue to build the Nigeria of our dreams,” he added.
