CAN Describes Late Imam as Symbol of Courage After Saving 262 Christians

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has described the late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi as an enduring symbol of courage, compassion, and shared humanity, following his heroic act of saving 262 Christians during a violent attack in 2018.

In a statement issued on Friday, CAN said the Imam demonstrated rare moral bravery by choosing to protect innocent lives at great personal risk. The association noted that his actions went beyond religious differences, affirming that the sanctity of human life must always come first.

According to CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the Imam’s selfless intervention not only saved lives but also strengthened hope and reinforced interfaith harmony at a critical moment in the nation’s history. He described the late cleric as a bridge-builder whose conduct reflected the true essence of faith and peaceful coexistence.

CAN recalled that Imam Abdullahi was honoured during its Sapphire Anniversary celebrations in 2021 for his exceptional service to humanity. The association emphasized that while awards may fade, his legacy remains a powerful example for religious leaders, communities, and future generations.

The Christian body called for sustained public recognition of the Imam’s sacrifice, including continued engagement with his family, so that his story can continue to inspire unity, mutual respect, and national peace.

CAN also extended its condolences to the Imam’s family, his community, and all those touched by his remarkable life, praying that his legacy will continue to speak where words fall short.
