Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on the Super Falcons to give their best and secure a win against host nation Morocco in the final match of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The game is scheduled to take place tonight, July 26, at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, with kick-off at 9 PM Nigerian time.
The Nigerian team, led by head coach Justin Madugu, is aiming to win its 10th WAFCON title — a record in the tournament’s history. The Super Falcons have had an impressive run, with four wins and one draw. They’ve scored 11 goals and only conceded once on their way to the final.
In a video shared on the team’s official X page, Oluremi Tinubu praised the players and coaching staff for their outstanding performance throughout the competition. She encouraged them to finish strong and bring the trophy home.
“My beautiful and lovely Super Falcons, I congratulate you and the officials for the qualification for the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations,” she said.
“I commend your team spirit, determination, and professionalism demonstrated in all your matches so far. You are shining examples to girls in Nigeria and Africa.
“As you step out for the final match, I pray God crowns your efforts with resounding victory. Make us proud, our worthy ambassadors and champions. Nigerians and I are waiting to receive you with a trophy in your hands.”
So far in the tournament, Nigeria started strong with victories against Tunisia and Botswana. They later drew with Algeria in the group stage. In the quarter-finals, they dominated Zambia with a 5-0 win, then edged out South Africa 2-1 in a tight semi-final.
However, there is concern over forward Francisca Ordega, who is still recovering from an injury she sustained before the semi-final. She missed that game and has not yet returned to full training. Ordega, who plays for Al-Ittihad Ladies, has only made one appearance in the tournament and hopes to claim her fifth WAFCON title with the national team.
Tonight’s match is a repeat of the 2022 Semi-Final clash, where Morocco beat Nigeria on penalties. This final gives the Super Falcons a chance to settle that score and make history once again.
