Nigerians have expressed outrage on social media after a video surfaced showing a police officer tying the shoelace of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
In the video that’s now widely shared online, Ganduje stood calmly while the officer, still in uniform and unidentified, knelt to lace his shoe. The incident has triggered strong reactions, with many questioning the appropriateness of a uniformed officer performing such a personal task for a political figure.
One user, @og_cemoni, asked, “Can he do the same for an ordinary citizen who is of the same age with Ganduje? He should respect his uniform, not the age. There is a whole lot wrong with it for a Policeman in uniform to be doing that. Does Ganduje not have personal aides?”
Another, @Monieca, sarcastically added, “And tomorrow you expect the Policeman to arrest him.”
@kelvin_kertz shared his frustration: “In Nigeria, Police officers are custodians of the law for the poor masses and errand boys for politicians.”
@Anthony Abraham mocked the situation, saying, “Be like NPF go begin add ability to double as house help, nanny, shukusheka to their CVs at this point.”
@laystan echoed a common sentiment with, “This is Nigeria where the security forces are slaves to the elite.”
Defending the officer, @ayenielijahofficial said, “Policemen doing busybodies because he wants to remain with APC National Chairman. You may not know the role Ganduje played in the man’s life. He get some people wey go help you, elevate you …you can kpai for them if need be. Whoever recorded this video has just lost his/her job and closeness to Powerful People.”
The incident comes shortly after another controversial video showing police officers allegedly receiving cash from a Chinese national, further fueling criticism of how the force is perceived in its relationship with those in power.
