The Nigerian Government has declared Monday, June 29 to Friday, July 3, 2026, as National Learning Assessment (NLA) Week, ahead of the country’s nationwide learning assessment to be conducted across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to a statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade, the exercise is aimed at generating reliable data on the academic performance of learners and providing evidence to guide educational planning, policy reforms, resource allocation and efforts to improve learning outcomes across Nigeria.
The Ministry stressed that the assessment is strictly diagnostic and will not be used for promotion, placement or certification of learners.
It noted that preparations for the exercise began in 2025 through collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Education and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), with support from UNICEF and the World Bank.
According to the statement, assessment instruments have already been developed, pilot-tested and personnel trained ahead of the exercise.
The nationwide assessment will be conducted in selected schools across the country and will involve pupils and students in Primary 3, Primary 5, Junior Secondary School 2 (JS2) and Senior Secondary School 2 (SS2).
Subjects to be assessed include English Language, Mathematics, Basic Science and Technology, as well as Citizenship and Heritage Studies.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, described the exercise as a major milestone in efforts to strengthen accountability within the education sector and improve learning outcomes through evidence-based decision-making.
He said the assessment would provide critical information needed to shape policies and interventions aimed at enhancing the quality of education nationwide.
