The House of Representatives Committee on National Planning and Economic Development has announced plans to engage all government agencies, commissions, and parastatals that still rely on outdated military decrees for their operations.
This initiative is part of an ongoing review to modernize their regulatory frameworks.
Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Isiaka, highlighted the importance of the review during a recent committee meeting in Abuja, emphasizing that updating these agencies’ legal frameworks will address longstanding issues.
He said Many agencies are still operating under decrees from as far back as 1974,Despite the National Assembly’s establishment in 1999, no committee has undertaken this essential update.”
Hon. Isiaka acknowledged persistent irregularities and corrupt practices within some agencies, especially regarding their budgetary allocations.
He emphasized that the review aims to correct these issues in line with the Committee’s oversight role.
Hon. Isiaka assured that the Committee would collaborate closely with the agencies to enact relevant amendments reflecting current realities.
On behalf of the government agencies, commissions, and parastatals, Wilfred Ikatari, Executive Director of the Regional Centre for International and Commercial Arbitration, commended the Committee’s efforts to enact these amendments.
He affirmed that such reforms are essential for the operational effectiveness of these agencies and will enable them to adapt to internal challenges and contribute more effectively to the national economy.
