CCTV Deepens Reps’ $50,000 Bribe, Forgery Saga (Video)

Fresh controversy has trailed the stormy House of Representatives session over the minority leadership tussle, following the emergence of a CCTV clip allegedly showing Rep. Philip Agbese inside the office of Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere signing a document.

The video, which surfaced hours after the House was thrown into a rowdy session on Thursday, has raised fresh questions over Agbese’s robust denial that he endorsed Ugochinyere for the position of Minority Leader.

However, while the CCTV footage appears to show Agbese signing a document, it does not establish what document he signed. It also does not show the Lawmaker collecting the alleged $50,000 reportedly claimed to have been given to Lawmakers who endorsed Ugochinyere.

The controversy erupted after Agbese, who represents Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency of Benue State, raised a matter of privilege during plenary, alleging that his signature was forged on a document nominating Ugochinyere to succeed Kingsley Chinda as Minority Leader. Reports by Nigerian news media said the allegation triggered a rowdy session as Lawmakers clashed over the claim.

Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State, denied forging Agbese’s signature and reportedly insisted that the Benue Lawmaker personally signed the nomination document. Ugochinyere during the House session maintained that Agbese endorsed his minority leadership ambition.

MJConcept TV News also reported that Agbese denied both signing the endorsement and collecting the alleged $50,000, which was said to have been offered to each of the Lawmakers linked to the nomination.

The CCTV clip may have complicated Agbese’s denial, but it has not conclusively resolved the central questions: what exactly he signed, whether it was the disputed endorsement document, and whether any money changed hands.
