Mayhem in Abuja by Shi’ite group members (Aug. 25th, 2024)
Two Policemen have been confirmed dead after early Sunday morning attack by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as the ‘Shi’ite’ group in Abuja.
Police source said the proscribed Shi’ite organization attacked the police checkpoint unprovoked, wielding machetes, improvised explosive devices (locally made bombs in bottles with kerosene), and knives.
The source said the Shi’ite group attacked some personnel of the Nigeria Police Force attached to FCT Command at Wuse Junction by traffic light.
“Two police personnel were killed, three left unconscious in the hospital, and three (3) Police patrol vehicles set ablaze,” the spokesperson of FCT Police Command, Josephine Adeh, a superintendent of police, said in a statement sighted by MJConcept TV News.
“FCT police command wishes to confirm an unprovoked attack by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as the ‘Shi’ite’ group, on some personnel of the Nigeria Police Force attached to FCT command at Wuse Junction by traffic light, where two (2) police personnel were killed, three left unconscious in the hospital, and three (3) Police patrol vehicles set ablaze, SP Josephine said in the statement.
“The proscribed organization attacked the police checkpoint unprovoked, wielding machetes, improvised explosive devices (locally made bombs in bottles with kerosene), and knives”.
According to Josephine, several arrests have been effected.
The Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, while condemning the unprovoked attack on Police officers, promises to bring those involved to book.
SP Josephine however said the situation is presently under control and normalcy restored as further development will be communicated in due course.
