2027: Babachir Lawal Joins NDC, Backs Obi-Kwankwaso

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Lawal formally joined the opposition party on Tuesday after meeting with the NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, at the Senator’s residence in Abuja.

The former SGF had resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on June 1 following the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the Party’s Presidential Candidate.

Lawal had previously expressed support for a possible Peter Obi-Rabiu Kwankwaso ticket and also backed Obi during the 2023 Presidential election when he contested on the platform of the Labour Party.

Speaking after he was received into the NDC, Lawal said his decision was driven by his desire to support what he described as a political platform focused on addressing Nigeria’s challenges.

He said Nigerians concerned about insecurity, hunger, ignorance and disease would have reasons to support a Party presenting Obi and Kwankwaso as its Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates.

“Anybody in Nigeria who has the interest of our country at heart and sympathy for the suffering that is ongoing in our country, along with insecurity, hunger, ignorance and disease, will have no choice but to join a Party that represents the future and have Peter and Kwankwaso as their candidates,” Lawal said.

He added that he was looking forward to working with the NDC towards what he described as the “noble objective” of having Obi as President and Kwankwaso as Vice President.

“So, by the grace of God, we look forward to May 29, 2027, to celebrate the feat properly for the good of the country, and future of generations yet unborn,” the former SGF said.

Lawal’s latest move marks a change from his position earlier in June, when he said he had ruled out supporting the NDC after leaving the ADC.
