Controversy Trails As Bishop Abioye Unveils New Church Ministry

The announcement of Bishop Abioye’s new Church Ministry, Living Word Conquerors Global Assembly, has sparked a wave of mixed reactions from Nigerians online.

Former Winners Chapel Vice President, Bishop David Abioye, has revealed the name of his newly established Ministry: Living Word Conquerors Global Assembly.

He made the official announcement during a Church Service held on Sunday, May 4, 2025, in Abuja. The unveiling came about six months after he formally retired from his long-time role at Winners Chapel in October 2024.

During the announcement, Bishop Abioye declared, “On this final note and to the glory of God, this Assembly with the name Living Word Conquerors Global Assembly is hereby inaugurated this day, Sunday, 4th May 2025, in the name of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, for the spiritual development, edification and triumph of the saints globally. And let someone join me to say a loud Amen.” He also shared that regular Sunday morning Services for the Ministry would now begin, with gatherings already set to hold at the Los Angeles Mall in Kado, Abuja — the same venue where he had been hosting Evening Services since stepping down from Winners Chapel.

His decision to establish a new Church stirred mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing both support and criticism. Some questioned his motives, pointing to earlier statements in which Bishop Abioye reportedly said he was not called to open a Church. One user, @SehindeOwoeye, asked, “What has happened to ‘God did not call me to open a Church’?

Others criticized the trend of senior pastors branching off to start new ministries. @yeltcoded lamented, “Must we break out from another? Just dividing the body of Christ.” Similarly, @blaze_din suggested, “It’s and will and has always been about the offering and tithes.” @OsuohaTony also questioned the need for a new ministry, saying, “Why’s he opening a church? Must he own a Church to serve God? Why not join an existing Ministry or a Missionary?

However, not all the feedback was negative. Some offered words of encouragement and congratulations. @victorexto wrote, “Congratulations to him and the Christian faith.” Another user, @dansantus, expressed joy with a simple, “Hallelujah. Glory be to His name.” @ololajohn reflected on loyalty and life choices, stating, “This man’s story has taught me that you have to be loyal only to God, your spouse, and yourself. This is what he should have done forty-three years ago. I pray God grants him grace for good health and a sound mind.

Despite the polarized responses, Bishop Abioye remains focused on his new path. In an earlier statement posted on his official X page, he thanked God for his time with Bishop David Oyedepo and the guidance he received while serving at Winners Chapel. His retirement, according to church protocols, was part of the operational guidelines under the Liberation Commission’s Constitution.
